The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie is a world-renowned wildlife healthcare facility. It has been caring for sick, injured and orphaned koalas since its inception in 1973.

The facility has a treatment room, plus eight Intensive Care Units. A 24 Hour Rescue and Treatment operation and multiple recovery yards. The Hospital also has a research affiliation with the University of Sydney. The hospital has grown immensely since its humble beginnings and now cares for more than 3,000 koalas yearly. The hospital provides essential medical care and rehabilitation to koalas before returning to the wild.

Roto House, an example of a 19th Century building shares the Port Macquarie Nature Reserve with the Koala facility. The 12 hectares of wet sclerophyll forest is a treatment and relocation centre for koalas displaced by urban expansion.

Distribution

Koalas live in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Although not endangered, although they are a vulnerable species. Some locally isolated koalas in the four states face endangered status due to habitat loss through housing development and wildfires.

The hospital’s dedicated veterinarians, nurses and volunteers provide 24/7 care to ensure all koalas receive the best treatment possible. In addition to providing medical attention, staff work hard to ensure every koala is given a safe and happy home during recovery. This includes enrichment activities such as climbing structures, toys, nesting boxes and more.

Since its establishment, the Koala Hospital has become a significant tourist attraction for visitors worldwide. With over 25,000 people annually visiting the facility to learn about koalas in-person or take photos with these adorable marsupials! With their increasing popularity comes an ever-growing need for support. This is why the hospital also carries out tree-planting program such as tree planting initiatives and workshops.
