Red Rock NSW
In 2001 during the Easter break, we returned from Hervey Bay where we had camped along Rainbow Beach. Even then it was becoming increasingly difficult to avoid caravan parks and find secluded camp spots. We did find one such place just south of Red Rock, NSW. Only a few km on the road out of Red Rock NSW, there was a small sandy fire track heading toward the coast. I stopped and backed up, and headed down the track.
In the old Landcruiser, we could take the track, cross a small inlet, negotiate the deep sand and end up on the beach. We spent three days camping on the beach and hardly saw a soul. So deserted we could get a skinny dip in the waves, enjoy a small campfire at night and unwind. I wonder if you could access this beach by vehicle today as it apparently passed through private property. I would love to hear from anyone who has experienced this gorgeous spot and know if it is still accessible.
Flat Battery
One minor hiccup was a flat battery caused by the car fridge… dead flat. With no one around, one option was to walk the few kilometres into the township, buy a battery and carry it back. Not wonderful.
Fortunately, a fisherman drove along the beach late on the third day, so I waved him down. He happened to have a set of jumper leads and quickly started my vehicle. On returning home, I did two things. Fitted dual batteries and put a small solar panel on the bonnet. Additionally, I always carry a small generator for any remote camping.
